Patients 18 years of age and older: Random urine testing is not available for adult patients. For HVA and VMA requests for adult patients, refer to HVA - 24 Hour Urine and VMA - 24 Hour Urine.

Specimen Requirements

Prefer 5-10 mL random urine.

Minimum: 1.0 mL urine

Specimen Handling

No preservative required.  NOTE: Specimen must be frozen within 4 hours of collection.

RRL & PSC:
Freeze immediately. Transport on ice to the DSC in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition.

Extra-regional:
Freeze immediately. Transport on dry ice to the DSC in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition.

DSC:
Place specimens in freezer upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

This test is only recommended for the investigation of neuroblastoma in pediatric patients.  For investigation of pheochromocytoma in adults, "Metanephrines - Urine" should be ordered.
