Specimen Requirements

Pediatric: 1 x 1.8 mL blue top sodium citrate

Adult: 1 x 8.5 mL yellow top ACD-A

Minimum volume: 0.5 mL

Accepted: EDTA, sodium heparin
Not accepted: lithium heparin

Specimen Handling

Specimens submitted to CLS from within Alberta: Mix well. DO NOT refrigerate, centrifuge or freeze. Deliver immediately to Flow Cytometry.

Specimens submitted to CLS from outside Alberta: CBC/DIFF required: fax CBC results to 403-270-4135.
DO NOT centrifuge or freeze samples. Ship at room temperature or 4oC, using an overnight courier. Please follow Flow Cytometry Shipping and Handling instructions when sending to CLS.

Relative and absolute counts are reported for the following lymphocyte subsets: CD3, CD3+4+, CD3+8+, CD3+4-8-, CD3-16/56+, CD3+16/56+, CD19, CD19+IgD+CD27- (naïve), CD19+ IgD+CD27+ (memory non-class switched), CD19+IgD-CD27+ (memory class-switched). CD3+4+ and CD3+8+ subsets are further classified as naïve, terminally differentiated, central memory, and effector memory subsets using CD45RA and CD27.
