Complete the Bronchoalveolar Lavage/Bronchial Wash Requisition REQ9024MI

ORDERING LIMITED TO PULMONARY RESPIROLOGISTS to assist in the assessment of interstitial lung disease (ILD) or eosinophilic pneumonia.

Specimen Requirements

1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube.
Place 3-4 mL fluid immediately into EDTA tube following collection. Mix well.

DO NOT send large volumes of fluid.
Specimen must not be clotted.

Specimen Handling

Ordering location:
Package specimen WITH requisition in a biological specimen bag. Send to laboratory with other BAL samples on same patient as soon as possible.

For FMC Bronchoscopy Suite Trial Only: label large transport bag with the Bronchoscopy Specimen Destination Label REG5285. For further information, refer to Bronchoscopy Specimen Packaging Instructions REG5286.

CLS Accession:
Forward specimen to CLS DSC Microbiology together with other BAL samples on the same patient. DO NOT ORDER TESTS.

DSC Microbiology:
Forward specimen to FMC Hematology. DO NOT ORDER TESTS.

FMC Hematology:
Determine specimen suitability. Take to FMC Accession, request FLOTHERC and FLOTHERCC be ordered with specimen type "BAL".

Fluid specimens must be transported for processing as soon as possible. Cellular elements may deteriorate upon standing.

Additional Information Differential will include hematopoietic cells only and will not be assessed for presence of malignancy or non-hematopoietic cells.
