Specimen Requirements

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

Adult: 2 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tubes

Pediatric: 1 x 2.7 mL blue top sodium citrate tube.

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

Specimen Handling

PSC and RRL:
Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature directly to DSC Special Coagulation. Must arrive within 4 hours of collection.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge at 2800 RCF for 20 minutes, aliquot plasma into 4 plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.


Specimens MUST be accompanied by a copy of the original requisition and completed a Lupus type inhibitor History Form SC4901 Send the original requisition for optical scanning. Note: for lab-collected SCM orders on inpatients, only history form is required, not requisition.

Additional Information

Testing includes: TTI, RVV/APTT

Test will not be processed if patient is on certain anticoagulants.

For stat testing on weekends or off hours, clinician MUST contact the Hematopathologist on Call to obtain approval. Samples can be collected but test will not be processed unless approved.
