Specimen Requirements

Prefer 5-10 mL random urine, first morning void if possible.  5-10 mL of 24-hour urine with no preservative is also acceptable.

Minimum: 4.0 mL urine.

Specimen Handling

If specimen is transferred to secondary container, write "random urine" or "24-hour urine" as appropriate on label.  Send a copy of the requisition with the specimen.

PSC:
Send on ice to DSC.

RRL:
Send on ice to ACH.

Extra-regional:
Freeze before transport to DSC.

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; frozen specimens do not thaw.

Additional Information

Disclaimer: these qualitative tests are used as a screen for certain underlying inherited (i.e. genetic) disorders of amino acid, carbohydrate, thiol-containing, and mucopolysaccharide metabolism. These tests are meant to complement targeted diagnostic investigations based on a patient's clinical presentation. These tests should not be relied on solely to establish nor rule out a clinically-suspected diagnosis.

The qualitative metabolic screen consists of the following tests performed on urine: Ferric Chloride Test; 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine Test (DNPH); Benedict's Test for Reducing Substances, Nitroprusside Test, Toluidine Blue Test, Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTMB) Turbidity Test.
