Specimen Requirements

Physicians: Molecular Hemostasis is not a coagulation screening test. Please order as Hemostasis Study (HS1).

CLS collection staff: Molecular Hemostasis Studies may only be ordered by hematologists and hematopathologists through the ACH hematology clinic or FMC RBBD clinic. All other requests must be ordered and collected as Hemostasis Study (HS1).

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Services (MCS)

Adult:
2 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tube AND 1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Pediatric:
2 x 2.7 mL blue top sodium citrate tubes AND 1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube (minimum 1 mL)

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if a citrate tube is the first tube drawn.

Sample collected in a green top sodium heparin tube will not be accepted.

Specimen Handling PSC and RRL:
Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature to DSC. Specimens must arrive within 4 hours of collection. DO NOT transport samples through pneumatic tube system.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge blue top tubes at 2800 RCF for 15 minutes, aliquot plasma into 2-3 plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC.
Transport lavender top EDTA to DSC at room temperature. Do not centrifuge or freeze.

DSC Accession:
For specimens that are received after 16:30, centrifuge blue top citrate tubes at 18oC and 2800 RCF for 15 minutes, aliquot plasma into 2-3 plastic tubes, and freeze aliquots at -70oC. Do not discard original tube with cells; store at 4oC. Store lavender EDTA at 4oC.
Additional Information Peripheral blood specimens must be accompanied by a completed CLS Molecular Hematology requisition (REQ9053MH). Include test required and patient/family history relative to the test.
