PSA, Total  is useful for monitoring the efficiency of therapy in patients with prostate carcinoma who are treated either by hormonal therapy, surgery or radiotherapy. It may have utility in men with a family history of prostate carcinoma, and in men with a positive digital rectal examination.

PSA, Fractionated/Free is used to determine the ratio of free PSA to total PSA which has been demonstrated to improve sensitivity and specificity in patients with total PSA values in the gray zone of 4 - 10 ug/L.
