Specimen Requirements

Infants ONLY: 1-2 mL lavender top EDTA AND 1-2 mL dark green top SODIUM heparin whole blood.

For older children, and for adults: See Cytogenetics by Microarray or Cytogenetics, Constitutional - Blood

For maternal screen: See Maternal Serum Prenatal Screen, Second Trimester

For postmortem specimens: See Cytogenetics, Constitutional - Tissues

Specimen Handling

DO NOT centrifuge or separate specimen; store and transport at room temperature.
Transport both tubes of blood as a RUSH, with requisition, to the Cytogenetics Laboratory, Alberta Children's Hospital.

Blood collected outside of regular hours, (Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:15) will be stored at room temperature in ACH Chemistry or in DSC Referrals. Samples stored over the weekend in DSC Referrals will be forwarded to ACH Cytogenetics Lab on Monday morning.
