Specimen Requirements

Submit 10 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection.

Collect 24 hour urine in plastic container with 20 mL of 6N Hydrochloric acid (HCl) as preservative. HCl must be in container during collection. Do not use any other preservative.

Store in a cool, dark place during collection. Refrigeration is acceptable.

PSC:
Direct patient to obtain container with 20 mL of 6N HCl from Beddington or Riverbend PSC or RRL Outpatient labs. HCL is not available at any other PSC. Specimen may be dropped off at any PSC after collection is complete.

Specimen Handling

PSC & RRL:
Transport on ice to DSC. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

Extra-regional:
Aliquot and freeze immediately. Transport to DSC on dry ice in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

DSC:
Place specimens in freezer upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

Additional Information A low tryptophan diet is recommended for 48 hours prior to and during collection. During this period, patien must abstain from avocados, bananas, coffee, plums, pineapples, tomatoes, walnuts, hickory nuts, mollusks, eggplant and medications such as aspirin, corticotropins, MAO inhibitors, phenacetin, catecholamines, reserpine and nicotine.
