Pediatric: 1 x 1.8 mL blue top sodium citrate

Adult: 1 x 8.5 mL yellow top ACD-A

Minimum volume: 1.0 mL

Also accepted: EDTA
Not accepted: sodium heparin, lithium heparin

Parent's samples should accompany the patient sample.

Specimen Handling

Specimens submitted to CLS from within Alberta: Mix well. DO NOT centrifuge or freeze. Deliver immediately to Flow Cytometry.

Specimens submitted to CLS from outside Alberta: DO NOT centrifuge or freeze samples. Ship at room temperature or 4oC, using an overnight courier. Please follow Flow Cytometry Shipping and Handling instructions when sending to CLS.

Specimens submitted to CLS from within Alberta: Samples should be tested within 48 hours of collection.

Sorted T cells from the patient, as well as parent's whole blood, is sent to the CLS Molecular Hematology Lab for further investigation. By determining the DNA fingerprint, patient's T cells can be identified as belonging to self or to the mother (maternal engraftment) as may be seen in primary immunodeficiencies with T cell development defects.
