Specimen Requirements

Do not collect on Fridays. Specimens must be received in the Molecular Pathology Laboratory within 72 hours of collection.

Test is performed on peripheral blood ONLY and is collected at FMC Special Services Building (SSB) laboratory.

Specimens may also be referred in by non-CLS labs.

2 x 10 mL black and brown top Streck Cell-Free DNA BCT tubes.

Minimum: 8.0 mL

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a BD discard tube or EDTA tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a Streck Cell-Free DNA BCT tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

Order of draw: after the EDTA tube and before the fluoride oxalate tube.

Mix well by inverting tube 8 to 10 times.

Specimen Handling

Do not use pneumatic tube system for transport.

Keep specimens at room temperature for same-day or next-day delivery.

Do not centrifuge.

FMC SSB Lab: Send specimens by porter to FMC 7th floor Anatomic Pathology (AP) Accession (in McCaig Tower).

Referred-In specimens: Send specimens to FMC 7th floor AP.

RRL sites: Contact FMC Accession. An MLA II  will arrange for transport for the Streck tubes to the requesting site. After collection, send specimens to FMC 7th floor Anatomic Pathology (AP) in McCaig Tower.

Include completed REQ9038AP Molecular Pathology Requisition.

Additional Information Molecular investigations must be DEDICATED specimens to avoid sample contamination.
