MDL Test Name Prompt: Thalassemia

Use orderable only for samples received with Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory requisitions.  For samples received with special third-party "Alpha Thalassemia" requisition, refer to Alpha Thalassemia by PCR.  For samples received with CLS or other requisitions, refer to Hemoglobinopathy Screen.

Specimen Requirements

Adults:
3 x 4 mL (or 2 x 6 mL) lavender top EDTA tube - whole blood

Pediatric:
2 x 3 mL tubes

Infants:
2 to 3 mL

Newborns:
1 mL

Specimen Handling

DO NOT centrifuge or separate specimen. DO NOT freeze.

Transport specimen, along with copy of Molecular Diagnostic Lab requisition, at room temperature without delay. Requisition must include results for previous hemoglobin electrophoresis testing.

Specimen must arrive at ACH before noon on Friday. Specimens collected after noon Fridays and over the weekend can be stored in a refrigerator for shipment to the Molecular Diagnostic Lab on Monday mornings.

PSC:
Transport to DSC.

RRL:
Transport to ACH.
