Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimens: osteomyelitis/orthopedic specimens. Pieces of bone/tissue or swabs from orthopedic prosthetic implant/bone graft.
Submit pieces of bone tissue or swabs of bone in anaerobic transport media (PRAS).

Please note that wherever possible, an aseptically collected tissue or fluid specimen is preferable to a swab, as swabs have relatively lower sensitivity for bacterial culture.

Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature.
Additional Information

Bone/bone tissue specimens are routinely cultured for anaerobes.
Indicate Candida/Yeast on requisition if required.

If tissue is associated with prosthetic joint infection, this must be indicated on requisition to ensure correct processing and incubation.

Turnaround time for negative culture: 4 days.
