Specimen Requirements Submit swab in Amies charcoal transport media.
Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature.
Additional Information Bacterial culture only available for cervical <13 years of age, or cervical with diagnosis.

Diagnosis includes:

  • toxic shock syndrome (TSS) including R/O Group A streptococcus (GAS) and/or Staphylococcus aureus,
  • sexual assault.
  • CSART or CAS ACH Gyne Clinics,
  • vaginal vault (hysterectomy),
  • vaginal wash (<13 years of age), or 
  • history of treatment failure. 

Turnaround time for negative culture: 3 days.
