Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimen: swab from wound, generally associated with skin or mucous membranes, NOT extending "deep" (<1cm) into tissues.

Could include: abrasion, impetigo, rectal/anal abscess, drainage surgical incisions, folliculitis, boils, cellulitis, cysts, axilla, rash, skin, ulcer (excluding oral sites), urogenital wounds (vulva, labia, episiotomy, Bartholin cyst, penis, foreskin, etc.)

Submit swab in  Amies transport media.

Submit swab in Amies charcoal transport media if rule-out
(R/O) Neisseria gonorrhoeae requested.

Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature or 4°C.
Additional Information Indicate specific source on requisition.
Indicate Candida/Yeast on requisition if required.

NOT suitable for anaerobic culture.

Turnaround time for negative culture: 2-3 days.
