Specimen Requirements

Collect rectal swab using APTIMA® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit (pink shaft swab and orange labelled tube).


Use the pink shafted swab in the package to collect the specimen.

Submit the swab in the APTIMA® Multitest Swab Transport Media.

NOTE: This method has not been assessed/validated for rectal specimens by the manufacturer. Results should be interpreted with caution.

If the APTIMA® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit is unavailable, the Aptima® Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit for Endocervical and Male Urethral Swab Specimens (blue shaft swab and white labeled tube) may be used to collect rectal samples from either males or females.

Cancellation Due to Improper Collection:

  • Collection of a rectal swab using the APTIMA® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit pink swab but placing it into the APTIMA® Unisex Swab Specimen Transport Tube (white label).

Specimen Handling

Store specimens at room temperature.

It is extremely important to follow single specimen packaging protocol for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)/Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) test specimens to prevent cross-contamination. Refer to Specimen Packaging Instructions OP7011A. 

Additional Information

Molecular test performed using nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), a method similar to polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
