Specimen Requirements

Submit saline lavage in a sterile container or sterile specimen trap.

    or   

Submit tissue/biopsy specimens in sterile distilled water in a
sterile container.

Specimen Handling

Transport STAT; must be received at the DSC within 2 hours of collection

Store specimen at room temperature.

DO NOT refrigerate

Additional Information

Prioritize multiple test requests by indicating #1, #2, etc. on the requisition.

Specimens will be processed the same day if they are received in the Microbiology department by 12:00 (noon) daily. Specimens that arrive after 12:00 (noon) will be processed the following day.

Legionella testing is performed using a two-step algorithm. All specimens are screened for Legionella by real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). If the screen is negative, the presence of Legionella can be ruled out. However, if the screen is positive, the specimen will be cultured for Legionella identification.

Turnaround time for negative specimens: 1 day.

Submit requests for clinical Legionella investigation from non-Calgary clients to the Provincial Laboratory. Complete a Provincial Laboratory requisition.

For Legionella culture requests received on a Provincial Laboratory requisition, testing will be performed by Provincial Laboratory. Refer to Provincial Laboratory Guide to Services:
