Specimen Requirements

Collect either a swab or urine specimen.

Use a swab with a plastic or aluminum shaft (do not use a swab with a wood shaft). 

Submit swab in Mycoplasma Transport Media.  The swab MUST immediately be inoculated into the mycoplasma transport media.

Submit a random urine specimen in a sterile container.

Specimen Handling

Store swab specimens at room temperature in Mycoplasma Transport Media  for up to 24 hours and at 4ºC for up to 48 hours. If the specimen cannot be received by Microbiology within 48 hours, the specimen can be frozen at -20ºC  in the transport media.

Store urine specimens at 4ºC for up to 24-48 hours.

Additional Information Turnaround time: 3 days.
