Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimens: endocervical (cervix, cervical), vaginal (pediatric), vaginal vault, urethral or rectal swab.
Submit specimen in Liquid Amies transport swab (red lid).

 

Submit urethral specimens in Amies MINI-TIP swab with charcoal (orange lid).

Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature.
Additional Information

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) culture available for treatment failure only.  Indicate on requisition.

Nucleic Acid Testing is the optimal method to screen for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

For GC throat cultures refer to Bacterial Culture, aerobic culture only - Throat

For GC eye cultures refer  to Bacterial Culture, aerobic culture only - Eye, Routine

Turnaround time for negative culture: 72 hours
