Specimen Requirements Submit a minimum of 1 mL specimen in sterile container.
Specimen Handling

All aspirates for ova and parasite examination MUST be received in the Microbiology laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Store at room temperature.
DO NOT refrigerate.
Additional Information

If specimen cannot be transported STAT:

  • aseptically remove a small portion of sample (approximately 1 mL) in a dry sterile container
  • in original container, estimate the amount of specimen left and add 3 parts of SAF (sodium acetate/acetic acid/formalin) fixative to 1 part specimen
  • note the volume of specimen and SAF on the requisition

Screen for Giardia routinely performed.

Both bacterial culture and parasitic examination are performed when a bacterial culture is ordered.
If only parasites are requested, a bacterial culture is NOT performed.
