Source Stool
Mnemonic M OP
Specimen Requirements

A clinical history form MUST be provided. Refer to Stool Ova & Parasite History Form MI6011.

If clinical history form is not provided a Parasite (Protozoal) Screen will be performed (M GIACRY).

Submit ONLY ONE stool specimen using the provided ova and parasite stool collection kit.
Add stool to both containers. If only the SAF Fixative container is received then the test will be cancelled with the exception of specimens received from Chinook Health Region.

Refer to Laboratory Patient Collection Instructions: Collecting Stool Samples for Bacterial Enteric Pathogen Testing, Rotavirus, Clostridium difficile Toxin, Parasite Screen and/or Ova and Parasites MI6000

DO NOT overfill SAF container. Add stool to "fill line" only.
Adequate mixing of stool specimen in SAF (sodium acetate/acetic acid/formalin) is critical for optimal preservation.

Unpreserved stool less than 2 hours old may be transferred to SAF.

Specimen Handling

Deliver specimen and requisition to the lab within 8 hours after collecting.
If delivery to laboratory is delayed, refrigerate specimen up to a maximum of 24 hours.

Leaking sample containers will NOT be accepted.

Additional Information

Specimens not accepted from patients who have been in hospital for more than 4 days.

Avoid, where possible, ordering ova and parasite examination for 10 days where a patient has had barium studies, antacids, mineral oil or recent mineral laxatives.

Antibiotics may reduce amoeboid parasite levels significantly for up to 3 weeks, resulting in false negative results.
