Specimen Requirements

Submit BAL in sterile container

or sterile specimen trap without preservative, diluent or fixative.

Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature.
DO NOT refrigerate.

Transport STAT to the hospital laboratory.
Specimen MUST be received in Microbiology at the Diagnostic and Scientific Centre (DSC) within 2 hours of receipt in the hospital laboratory.
Additional Information

Sputum, endotracheal aspirates and bronchial brushes are NOT acceptable specimens. Performance of PJP testing on all non-BAL specimens (e.g. Sputum) requires Microbiologist on Call approval (403-770-3600).

Testing of BAL for Pneumocystis jirovecii is by real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The PCR method is greater than 95% sensitive and 99% specific.

Specimens will be processed the same day if they are received in the Microbiology department by 12:00 (noon) daily. Specimens that arrive after 12:00 (noon) will be run the following day.
