Specimen Requirements

Submit ONLY ONE stool specimen using the provided collection container.

Add stool to both containers if using the Stool Collection Kit.

Refer to Laboratory Patient Collection Instructions: CLS Form #MI6000 Collecting Stool Samples for Bacterial Culture, Rotavirus, Clostridium difficile Toxin, Parasite Screen and Ova and Parasites 

DO NOT overfill SAF container. Add stool to "fill line" only.
Adequate mixing of the stool specimen in SAF (sodium acetate/acetic acid/formalin) is critical for optimal preservation. 

Unpreserved stool less than 2 hours old may be transferred to SAF.

Specimen Handling

Deliver specimen and requisition to the lab within 8 hours after collecting.
If delivery to laboratory is delayed, refrigerate specimen up to a maximum of 24 hours.

Leaking sample containers will NOT be accepted.

Additional Information Specimens not accepted from patients who have been in hospital for more than 4 days.

Screening of stool is used to detect Giardia species, Cryptosporidium species and Entamoeba histolytica. These pathogens comprise a significant majority of parasitic infections that are encountered in clinical practice.
