Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimens: vaginal swab, vaginal wash, male urethral swab, entire first morning urine void, urine specimen after prostatic discharge.

 Submit vaginal or male urethral swabs in Amies transport media.
 Swabs with cotton tips or wooden shafts are not recommended.
 Note: during specimen collection avoid contact between the swab and lubricant.

Submit urine, vaginal wash, or prostatic discharge specimens in a sterile container.

 

Specimen Handling

Vaginal swabs may be stored at room temperature or refrigerated but must be tested within 36 hours of specimen collection to ensure test validity.

DO NOT refrigerate urine, male urethral swabs, vaginal wash or prostatic discharge specimens. Store at room temperature and submit within 24 hours of collection.

 

Additional Information Cervical swabs are NOT acceptable.
