Specimen Requirements

Collect eye swab using  Aptima® Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit for Endocervical and Male Urethral Swab Specimens (blue shaft swab and white labelled tube).

Two swabs are provided with the kit. Discard the white shafted swab; it is not required for eye specimen collection. Use the blue shafted swab to collect the eye specimen.

Submit the swab in the APTIMA® Unisex Swab Specimen Transport Tube.

NOTE: This method has not been assessed or validated for eye specimens by the manufacturer. Results should be interpreted with caution.

The swab contained in the APTIMA® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit (pink shaft swab and orange labelled tube) should NOT be used to collect eye samples.

Cancellation Due to Improper Collection:

  • Collection of an eye swab using the APTIMA® Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit blue swab but placing it into the APTIMA® Multitest Swab Transport Media (orange labelled tube).

Specimen Handling
Store specimens at room temperature.

It is extremely important to follow single specimen packaging protocol for 
Chlamydia trachomatis (CT)/ Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) test specimens to prevent cross-contamination.  Refer to Specimen Packaging Instructions OP7011A. 


 

Additional Information

Molecular test performed using nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), a method similar to polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Negative result turnaround time:
Final result - 48 hours.
