Specimen Requirements

Requisition
Use HIV Viral Load Requisition REQ9023MI.


Collection Locations
Specimens cannot be collected by CLS Mobile Collection Services (MCS).

Patient Service Centres:
Specimens can be collected at the following Patient Service Centres (PSCs) ONLY; appointments are recommended and can be booked at www.calgarylabservices.com or by phoning 403-770-5136.

  • Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre (SMCHC) PSC between 7:00 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. Monday to Friday
  • South Calgary Health Centre (SCHC) PSC between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday

Acute Care Collection Sites:
Specimens may also be collected at any acute care outpatient lab Monday to Friday.


Collection Requirements
PSC:

For HIV Plasma Viral Load, collect 1 x 5 mL Plasma Preparation Tube (PPT).
Refer to Additional HIV Specimen Collection for other exam requests.

Acute Care Collection Sites:
For HIV Plasma Viral Load
, collect 1 x 6 mL lavender top EDTA tube for adult patients, or 1 x 3 mL lavender top EDTA tube for pediatric patients.
Refer to Additional HIV Specimen Collection for other exam requests.


Additional HIV Specimen Collection
  -
HIV Genotypic Resistance/Tropism Testing:
collect as indicated on the requisition.
  -  Plasma HIV V3 Genotyping (Tropism): collect as indicated on the requisition.
  -  Archive Plasma Sample: refer to HIV Archive Plasma Sample.

  -  PCV13 Special Archive Sample (at Sheldon Chumir PSC only): refer to HIV PCV13 Special Archive Sample.
  Other: collect as indicated on the requisition.

Note: if only able to collect one tube and more are needed, do not open the tube. Send the tube (within 4 hours of collection) TDG to DSC Microbiology to aliquot and forward to the HIV Laboratory.

Specimen Handling

Specimens must be centrifuged and plasma removed from the red cells within 4 hours of collection. If biological safety cabinet (BSC) is not available, do not centrifuge specimens; send specimen so it is received at Microbiology DSC within 4 hours of collection.

  • PPT tubes: centrifuge at 1100 rcf for 10 minutes and DO NOT aliquot. Ship centifuged specimen to DSC Microbiology.
  • EDTA tubes: centrifuge at routine settings (1100-1300 rcf) for 10 minutes. Aliquot in a BSC and ship to DSC Microbiology.

All HIV specimens are shipped using Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) guidelines. Send the HIV Viral Load plasma or unspun HIV Viral Load specimen to the DSC with a completed viral load requisition.
