Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) is seeking a full time General Pathologist for Red Deer Regional Hospital starting July 1, 2020. Red Deer Regional Hospital is a regional institution located in the city of Red Deer, Alberta. Anatomical Pathologists will also be considered. It is the referral center for over 20 smaller rural hospitals. The catchment area has a population of 500,000 and serves the geographic area of Central Alberta. Red Deer Regional Hospital is a 345 bed acute care facility and provides a comprehensive service for most specialties and has an onsite cancer centre. The successful candidate will join a team of 12 laboratory physicians and is required to have excellent skills in surgical pathology. Additional expertise in cytology, dermatopathology and/or hematopathology would be of value. There are opportunities to perform bone marrow biopsy and fine needle aspirations. APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory organization providing comprehensive laboratory services and is an independent, but publically funded organization that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS). The Red Deer Regional Hospital laboratory has sections of anatomical pathology (including non-gynecologic cytology), hematology, biochemistry and microbiology with most testing performed onsite in Red Deer. Comprehensive onsite immunohistochemistry is available. 32000 surgical specimens, 6500 non-gynecologic cytology specimens and 6000 peripheral blood smear specimens are processed annually. Red Deer is a mid-sized city with a population of 101,500 and is the third largest city in Alberta. The city has excellent amenities including Red Deer College. The location is convenient for both winter and summer recreational activities. Both Edmonton and Calgary are approximately 1.5 hours away with the Rocky Mountains within 2 hours.


Job Summary & Responsibilities
The General/Anatomical Pathologist will report directly to the Regional Laboratory Medicine Site Chief in Red Deer who in turn reports to the Medical Director, South Sector of Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) and the provincial Chief Medical Laboratory Officer of APL. The General Pathologist must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established key performance indicators and provincial metrics, must actively participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, and teaching when required.


Qualifications
Qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Anatomic Pathology or General Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Compensation
An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided. Options to function as either a contractor or an employee exist. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of fellowship training and experience. Remuneration range for a Laboratory Physician / Pathologist in Alberta is $353,874.00 to $411,650.00.
