The physician MUST notify Neuropathology (403-944-1576) before the surgery. To allow enough time for proper tissue processing, muscle biopsies MUST be booked early enough so the specimen arrives in neuropathology BEFORE 14:00.
If at all possible, physicians should notify Neuropathology at least 24 hours in advance of the biopsy.
The requisition MUST include both the surgeon's and the primary caring physician's name and contact information for clinical information and reporting.
Do NOT immerse the specimen in liquid saline. Place the specimen on a saline moistened Telfa Pad. Place the Telfa Pad and specimen in a screw-capped container. Label the container according to CLS requirements. Include the site of the muscle biopsy. The lid on the container must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage. Place the container with the specimen into a larger container filled with ice (NOT dry ice).
The specimen MUST be immediately transported on ice to the neuropathology histology laboratory.
A complete procedure protocol is available from CLS Neuropathology (403-944-1576).
