Specimen Requirements

24 hour:
Urine specimen MUST be kept FROZEN during entire collection and transport process (no preservative). Patient must place 24-hour urine collection container into freezer immediately after each voiding throughout the 24-hour collection period.

Random:
Prefer 5-10 mL random urine.

Minimum: 1.0 mL urine.

Specimen Handling

Send a copy of the requisition with the specimen.

For 24 hour urine: Measure total volume and send 10 mL aliquot of urine; write "24 hour urine" on the label.

If random urine is transferred to a secondary container, write "random urine" on label.

PSC :
Send on ice to DSC.

RRL:
Send on ice to ACH.

Extra-regional:
Keep frozen during transport to DSC. 

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab, ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.
       

Additional Information This test is for the investigation of disorders of amino acid transport and select disorders of amino acid metabolism.  This test has limited utility for investigating disorders of amino acid metabolism, and therefore Amino Acids - Blood is the recommended test for primary investigation.
