Specimen Requirements NOTE: Collected by Respiratory/Nursing Services

175 uL Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Capillary Tube. Minimum fill of 1/3 to 1/2 of capillary blood in the Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Capillary Tube.
Specimen Handling Mix well. Avoid or remove air bubbles. Do NOT place on ice or in ice slurry. Must be analyzed within 15 minutes of collection.
Additional Information

BGC includes: pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess (BE), Total Hemoglobin, O2 Saturation (Oxyhemoglobin), Carboxyhemoglobin, Methemoglobin, Hematocrit, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Ionized Calcium, Glucose and Lactate.

BGCN includes: pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess (BE), Sodium, Potassium, Chloride Ionized Calcium, Glucose and Lactate.

Exception: CRL does not report Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Ionized Calcium, Glucose or Lactate.

ACH:
Page respiratory at 05820 for ED or 05253 for inpatients prior to collection to confirm availability to assay specimen within 15 minutes.

NOTE: Patient must meet the qualifications to have a blood gas performed. These tests are run as a panel ONLY. This panel is not for routine electrolyte, metabolite or hemoglobin testing.
