Specimen Requirements

24 hour:
Urine specimen MUST be kept FROZEN during entire collection and transport process (no preservative). Patient must place 24 hour urine collection container into freezer immediately after each voiding throughout the 24 hour collection period.

Random:
Prefer at least 10 mL random urine, first morning void if possible (at least 5 mL for infants).


Requires a minimum four-hour fast or just prior to next feed for newborns.
 
Specimen Handling

For 24 hour urine: Measure total volume and send 10 mL aliquot of urine; write "24 hour urine" on the label.

If random urine is transferred to a secondary container, write "random urine" on label.

PSC :
Send on ice to DSC.

RRL:
Send on ice to ACH.

Extra-regional:
Keep frozen during transport to DSC. 

Additional Information Send a copy of the requisition with the specimen.
