Specimen Requirements

1 x 3.5 mL gold top SST tube

1 mL serum

CLS staff: collect specimen and forward to DSC Accession, who will forward specimen to Referrals.

Specimen Handling PSC & RRL:
Centrifuge, pour off into two aliquots, and transport serum on ice to DSC. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge, pour off into two aliquots, and freeze serum prior to transport to DSC. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.
Additional Information Serotonin may be increased by diet or released by medications. For 48 hours prior to collection, patient must abstain from avocados, bananas, coffee, plums, pineapples, tomatoes, walnuts, hickory nut, mollusks, eggplant and medications such as aspirin, cortocotropins, MAO inhibitors, phenacetin, catecholamines, reserpine and nicotine.
