Specimen Requirements

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

Adult:

4 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tubes
AND 1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Pediatric:
2 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tubes AND 1 x 3 mL lavender top EDTA tube.

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if the citrate tube is the first tube drawn.

Specimen Handling PSC and RRL:
Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature directly to DSC Special Coagulation. Specimens  must arrive within 4 hours of collection.

Extra-regional:
Lavender tube: ship unspun at room temperature.
Blue top tubes: centrifuge at 2800 RCF for 20 minutes, aliquot plasma into 8-10 plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.

Specimens MUST be accompanied by a copy of the original requisition and a completed Thrombophilia Screen/Related Procedures History Form SC4902. Send original requisition for optical scanning. Note: for lab-collected SCM orders on inpatients, only history form is required, not requisition.

Additional Information Testing includes antithrombin, protein C, protein S, activated protein C resistance, factor V Leiden, factor II variant (factor II polymorphism, prothrombin gene mutation), lupus type inhibitor (THROMB order includes Thrombophilia Screen and DNATR).
 
For stat testing on weekends or off hours, clinician MUST contact the Hematopathologist on Call to obtain approval. Samples can be collected but test will not be processed unless approved.
