Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimens include:

  • peripheral stem cells, 
  • allogenic bone marrow (ALBM),
  • allogenic stem cells (ALSC), 
  • autologous stem cells (AUSC), 
  • autologous whole blood (AUTB),
  • autologous bone marrow (AUBM),
  • cord blood
  • albumin

Specimens for bacterial culture may be submitted in FAN pediatric blood bottles, or
sterile tubes by Blood Bank or Transfusion Medicine. Submit approximately
3 mL: minimum volume 1.5 mL, maximum volume 4 mL.

Diffused stem cell bags may be submitted; the remaining contents are cultured for sterility.

Submit specimens for fungal culture in a red top tube.

Complete the CLS Microbiology Infection Surveillance Requisition (7828M).
Clearly indicate specimen type.

Turnaround time for negative fungal culture: 14 days.

Turnaround time for negative bacterial culture: 5 days.
