Specimen Requirements

Routine Throat specimens: Throat or pharynx swab. See Additional Information below for specific organisms tested.

Submit swab specimen in Liquid Amies transport swab (red lid)

GC culture from throat/pharynx sources: performed only upon request or with specific history. See Additional information below.

Specimen Handling Store specimen at room temperature or 4°C.
Additional Information

Routine specimens are tested for: Beta-hemolytic streptococci (Group A, C and G), Arcanobacterium species, and Yeast (Candida). Patients should have a history of recurrent pharyngitis and/or treatment failure.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) culture performed for patients on request or with a history of treatment failure, or sexual assault/exposure.

Turnaround times for negative culture: 48 to 72 hours.

CLS Microbiology (Culture)

GC isolates are referred to the Provincial Laboratory for antibiotic susceptibility testing.

GAS and S. aureus isolates may be referred to the Provincial Laboratory for toxin testing if TSS present.
